A building that has survived over centuries on this privileged location deserves to be treated as a jewel of humanity. The fortress of Santa Caterina has a strong hieratic value and it should stand as that. The intervention consists in potentialize and rehabilitate the spaces without altering the building’s essence.
The Project was based on the Art in Nature idea, designing an open-air gallery that encloses works of art and guides the way to the fortress. Therefore, the ascending walkway is an excavated passage inside the mountain that confines visitors into an internal self-discovering journey. This ascending journey is defined by five spaces: Prison access, physical imprisonment, emotional imprisonment, rational imprisonment and spiritual imprisonment.
